Pool cage painting - All you need to know to revamp it! [2024]

Pool cages can turn any outdoor space into a sanctuary, protecting pools and gardens from weather conditions. And because they are not only decorative but also functional, their conditions need to be maintained.

At times, refreshing something up can be a better alternative than buying it brand new. That is the case with pool cages, they can be rescreened and repainted to mint condition, to keep them from looking dull and damaged. That’s what we do at Pool Paint Screen LLC.

Everyday outdoor conditions, such as rain, wind and sun, will weaken the pool cages. Making restoration and painting fundamental to the maintenance of its functions. The prices for these reconditioning processes can vary depending mainly on factors such as size, paint and materials. But in general, it is always a cheaper, quicker and much more reliable option than installing it brand new.

Pool cage paint - How much does it cost in Florida?

The paint prices in Florida are different depending on the brand and type of paint. The Bond-Plex paint from Sherwin Williams ranges around $190, whereas the DTM Paint from Sherwin Williams ranges around  $130. Pool Paint Screen LLC always uses Sherwin Williams products due to their outstanding quality, high durability and well-known reliability.

On the other hand, pool cage rescreening services costs can also vary depending on different factors, just as the price of the screens. In a reliable material supplier store like Home Depot, screen rolls can cost around $229, and up to $650, depending on the type of the pool screen and its width.

In Pool Paint Screen LLC the price will depend mainly on the type of service given, the material of the screening, the type of paint used, the height of the pool cage, and the overall size of the pool cage itself.

The services you can find at Pool Paint Screen LLC include pool cage painting and/or rescreening. And in the case of rescreening, the variation of prices will depend on mesh sizes and materials:

  • Fiberglass 18x14

  • Fiberglass 20x20

  • Polyester 16x14

  • Polyester 17x20

What products do I need to paint a pool cage?

When it comes to painting a pool cage, the main product used is the paint itself. It is very important to choose the one that fits your needs, as they can have different functions or qualities that become useful depending on the pool cage and the space in hand.

The Bond-Plex and the DTM (Direct-to-metal) Paint, both from Sherwin Williams, are the paints that we, at Pool Paint Screen LLC, work with and recommend the most, as they are meticulously formulated to meet the unique demands of pool cage painting.

The Bond-Plex is formulated for marine applications. It is made for areas that demand longevity as it is designed to last by resisting peeling, chirping, and humid or coastal conditions. It is also made to withstand contact with corrosive chemicals.

The Bond-Plex doesn’t require a primer before its application over the structure surfaces. Additionally, the Bond-Plex paint comes in an eggshell finish with a  variety of shades, that can adapt to the client’s needs and desired final look for their pool cage. In Florida, the most used colors are White and the Mannix Bronze.

The Bond-Plex paint is usually recommended for applications that need to last longer or resist use and weather conditions.

On the other hand, DTM (Direct-to-metal) Paint from Sherwin Williams is a high-performance acrylic-based paint characterized by its corrosion and rust resistance, and adhesion properties that allow it to be applied directly upon metal, without the need for a primer, saving time and effort.

Its fast drying qualities also add up for faster completion of the painting when used. Additionally, it is available in various finishes such as matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Pool Paint Screen LLC recommends the matte finish, to avoid any possible flash on paint since we work outside.

Based on its quality and long lasting results, the DTM (Direct-to-metal) Paint from Sherwin Williams is usually recommended for easier and quicker applications.

What products do I need to rescreen a pool cage?

The choosing of the screenings is a fundamental step in any pool cage rescreening process. The screens can vary in very different materials that adapt to different conditions, needs and looks.

The fiberglass and polyester screenings are the two most used materials. The former can withstand corrosion as it consists of a mesh made from woven fiberglass coated with a protective vinyl; it also provides airflow, visibility and protection from insects —as grasshoppers— and snakes.

On the other hand, polyester screens are not that different from fiberglass meshes, as they also provide visibility, airflow, and corrosion resistance. Generally, polyester is slightly pricier than fiberglass screenings due to their enhanced durability.

The Florida glass is another screen, also known as the Privacy Screen, made from woven fiberglass laminated with a plastic or vinyl material on one side. This will result in the visibility being obscured from the outside, because of the lamination, giving some privacy —thus the name. While this screening is also water resistant, it can peel or tear over time if exposed to extreme sunlight and heat.

And last but not least, the pet screens are made from heavy-duty vinyl-coated polyester, which is several times stronger than traditional screens. This makes it more durable, and resistant to scratches, tears and damages from pets.

Although, due to this enhanced durability, pet screen prices tend to be on the higher end, compared to other screenings. Some homeowners choose to use pet screens in lower sections only (where pets might scratch) and standard screens in the upper parts.

How often should I paint my pool cage?

Modern pool cages are made to last up to 15-20 years, yet it is recommended that they be repainted every 8-10 years.

However, it’s hard to determine exactly how often a pool cage should be repainted, as it will mainly depend on the weather conditions it is exposed to and the paint previously used.

For example, a pool cage in a coastal environment will probably need repainting every 5 years, as the overall outdoor conditions promote peeling and chirping in the paint coat; whereas, a pool cage in an arid condition can last longer.

Is pool cage painting worth it?

It is 100% worth it. Repainting a pool cage can help maintain it in optimal conditions, allowing it to be functional and look top-notch.

In this sense, pool cages will not only keep the dirt out, but also improve the safety and security of the area, discourage algae growth —make pool maintenance easier— increase the property value, and add to the overall look of the property.
