Epoxy paint – epoxy resin: How long do they last?

If you need to paint your garage floor, pool deck, or other exterior house surfaces, epoxy paint and epoxy resin could be the solution. Here you will find epoxy paint and epoxy characteristics and advantages.

What is epoxy paint?

Epoxy paint is latex acrylic paint mixed with a small amount of epoxy resin. This addition makes it more durable and resistant to chemicals and abrasion. This makes it a popular choice for garage floor painting.

Epoxy paint offers a wide variety of colors and finishes, making it very versatile for any space. Unlike epoxy resin, epoxy paint does not cure, but rather dries up. It also adheres better to concrete in comparison to other types of paint.

What do you use epoxy paint for?

Epoxy paint is versatile, has many applications, and can be used on garages, floors and bathrooms. In general, epoxy paint offers great durability and resistance against chemicals, stains and abrasions, which makes it ideal for garages, high-traffic floors and some industrial settings.

In addition, it can be applied on a variety of surfaces, including concrete, metal and tile. It is highly customizable, with a diversity of colors and finishes, including high-gloss, matte and satin.

Given that it does not absorb liquids, it is also easier to clean and maintain. It is resistant to fading and yellowing, which allows it to keep its original appearance for years.

Is epoxy paint waterproof?

Strictly speaking, no. Epoxy resin, and therefore epoxy paint, is water resistant, but not waterproof. What this means is that epoxy will not let water seep through it and cause damage, but if kept submerged in water, it will deteriorate.

However, its water-resistant properties make it a great choice for sealing surfaces and protecting them from moisture, rot, decay and corrosion.

What is epoxy paint mostly used for?

While very versatile, epoxy paint is mostly used for flooring. Its resistance and high durability against impact and chemicals make it a great choice for flooring, especially when talking about garages. Its properties are good against high foot traffic, heavy equipment, strong chemicals and oily substances.

Additionally, epoxy paint can be also used in kitchen countertops and cabinets, as well as in showers and bathtubs.

How many coats of epoxy can you use?

In general, two layers of epoxy paint should be enough to achieve a good finish on the surface. As a rule of thumb, you should wait for at least 12 but no more than 48 hours before applying the second coat.

Some manufacturers recommend sanding after the first coat is done, and before applying the second coat. This allows for better adhesion between layers and provides a better result overall.

Of course, it is always recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How long does epoxy paint take to dry?

This depends on the manufacturer, but some brands can be ready for heavy foot traffic in 24 hours. It is recommended to wait for around a week before driving on top of floors painted with epoxy paint.

Of course, weather conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity do affect the drying time. Depending on the product manufacturer, temperatures ranging from 70 to 85 °F and humidity around 50% are recommended when applying epoxy paint.

What are the benefits of epoxy paint?

Here are some benefits of using epoxy paint in your projects:

  • Versatility: Epoxy paint is great when talking about garage or basement floor painting. However, it can also be very useful when painting kitchen countertops and cabinets, as well as showers and bathtubs. Its high resistance against moisture and chemicals make it ideal for all these settings.

  • Materials: Epoxy paint works really well with concrete, but it also adheres well to other materials, like wood, metal and tile. This gives you more freedom in your projects, as it allows you to work with more materials.

  • Maintenance: This type of paint is highly resistant against moisture, chemicals and liquids. This allows it to be extremely durable and easy to clean, which is always a welcomed advantage.

What is epoxy resin?

In general, epoxy resins are a type of polymer made from monomers that contain at least two epoxide groups. What matters about this is that epoxy’s strong adhesion and chemical resistance make it very useful in many settings.

Normally, when talking about epoxy resins, we mean the two-part coating, where one part is resin and the other is a hardener. However, not all epoxies work like this, and some are solvent-based and water-based. Solvents and water act as carrier agents and allow the epoxy to be easier to apply. In general, there are three types of epoxy resins:

Solvent-based epoxy

It offers many advantages over water-based epoxy, like greater durability and performance, more resistance against oil-based products —which makes it ideal for garages— and a glossier finish.

However, this type of epoxy contains a high amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Given that these substances are potential pollutants, government regulations around solvent-based epoxy have tightened lately.

This means that, while this type of epoxy was the norm for many years, some producers and customers may prefer other more environmentally friendly solutions.

Water-based epoxy

This type of epoxy contains from zero to very low contents of VOCs. This is a relatively new technology, which has only recently begun to catch up to solvent-based varieties. However, they have minimal odor and, in some cases, can be applied to concrete while it is still damp or in the process of curing.

High solids epoxy

Also known as 100% solids epoxy, it does not contain VOCs or water. While not so easy to apply, this type of epoxy offers a thicker dry film, excellent durability, and can protect concrete from chemicals, impact and other types of wear and tear.

High solids epoxy do not evaporate, but rather cure. This is achieved by mixing the resin with a hardener. A 100% solids epoxy can last for many years on concrete.

Is epoxy resin good for beginners?

This depends, but in general, epoxy resins are beginner-friendly! Here are some factors that weigh in on the difficulty of epoxy resin use:

  • The type of project: You can use epoxy resin as a coating for floors, tables and countertops. This means that the amount of epoxy necessary and the steps to follow vary on each project. However, this difficulty factor has to do more with the working surface rather than with epoxy itself!

  • The type of resin being used: Solvent-based or water-based epoxy are easier to apply in comparison to high solids epoxy. This is because solvents and water act as carrier agents and allow the epoxy to flow more easily. In contrast, high solids epoxy are not as easy to apply, but gives more resistant results overall.

  • The manufacturer: Each manufacturer has its own set of instructions for each type of epoxy they sell. Some types of epoxies need to be mixed with their hardener in specific ratios; some just need a two-to-one ratio. In any case, you should be fine if you read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Is epoxy resin dangerous?

It may cause adverse effects if you are overexposed to it, but only when applying it. That is, after the applying process is over, it is safe to be around epoxy.

Symptoms caused by epoxy overexposure may be asthma (chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing), skin irritations (swelling, redness, itching, etc.), irritation in the eyes, nose and throat, and headache, nausea dizziness, confusion or loss of consciousness from absorption through the skin.

Some ways of avoiding overexposure are using epoxy that contain little to no solvent, that do not contain asbestos, fiberglass or silica fillers in a dry form; ensuring tight seals in epoxy containers; ensuring proper ventilation in the work area; using gloves, goggles and/or face shields; as well as removing clothes contaminated with epoxy chemicals.

Is epoxy resin stronger than concrete?

In a few words, yes. Epoxy can resist around 10,000 psi of compression, while concrete typically resists around 4,000 to 5,000 psi. Not only can it resist compressive strengths, but tensile strengths, too.

This is why it is advisable to coat concrete floors with epoxy. By doing so, you can make your floor sturdier and more resistant.

Does epoxy resin crack easily?

Normally, no. Cracking can happen during the curing phase of the process. When mixing the resin with the hardener, the chemical reactions that occur produce heat. If epoxy resin gets too hot and then cools down too fast, it will crack to release energy.

How can you avoid cracking? First, do not mix too much resin and hardener at the same time. Second, your layers should not be too thick, as thicker layers can store more heat. Third, good ventilation is not only necessary for health reasons, but to allow the resin to cool properly.

What are the benefits of epoxy resin?

  • Resistance and durability: Epoxy resin is highly resistant against tensile and compressive strengths, and very durable against chemicals, grease, stains and oils. This allows it to last longer than other materials.

  • Appearance: Despite its high durability, it can provide a very good-looking glossy finish. Epoxy resin does not only protect the surface, but it also provides a nice and professional look to the place.

  • Easier maintenance: Just like epoxy paint, resin is very resistant against chemicals, heat and moisture. However, resin is even more durable than paint. That means that it will last longer and give you an easier time on maintenance.
